Why doesn't my child like to write?
Writing needs certain prerequisites. First comes balance, then accuracy, correctness and beauty....
When reading and spelling aren't fun despite practice.
Historically, dyslexia was first mentioned in medicine in the 19th century. Psychology, sociology and education research the difficulties in learning reading, writing and arithmetic skills. This explains the different approaches and methods.
As the Evoped® shows, stress can block our brain and lead to learning difficulties and behavioral blocks. This is why it is so important that the conditions for stress-free learning are in place. Not every difficulty in learning our cultural techniques is the same as a reading and spelling difficulty, dyslexia or dyscalculia and calculation weakness/difficulties.
According to brain researcher J. Ratey (Harvard Medical School), 80% of people with dyslexia have a visualization problem. This is evident in our daily work. This can be countered with targeted movement exercises.
"Nothing is in the mind that was not previously in the senses" (John Locke, English philosopher)
Children learn the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic through play during their pre-school years. The senses of sight, sound and spatial perception are responsible for making reading, writing and arithmetic easy. However, natural play and experience of one's own body and the environment is increasingly being replaced by the increased use of new media in young children. Unfortunately, today's children are missing out on these essential experiences. Understanding comes from touching.
Learning difficulties caused by reading and spelling difficulties or dyslexia as well as arithmetic difficulties or dyscalculia are usually only recognized at school age.
Difficulties in the acquisition of reading, writing and arithmetic and insufficient progress despite additional exercises, as well as inattentiveness in writing, reading or arithmetic indicate this.
There are various reasons for problems with reading, writing and arithmetic. It is therefore necessary to differentiate in order to set up the right training:
The First Austrian Dyslexia Umbrella Association is the largest independent dyslexia institution in Austria, pursues a scientifically underpinned pedagogical-didactic approach and distinguishes between:
Dyslexia and dyscalculia are biogenetic predispositions that can only be overcome through special training. Approximately 15 % of the population is affected. Primary dyslexia can be trained in the educational/didactic field. Secondary dyslexia requires additional medical or psychological interventions.
Reading and spelling difficulties can be remedied with increased practice. The pedagogical-didactic approach of the AFS method differentiates between dyslexia and dyslexia. Group training is not very effective, as each dyslexia/dyscalculia has its own individual characteristics.
The AFS method helps people with dyslexia/dyscalculia to learn to read, write and do arithmetic. The First Austrian Association for Dyslexia has been working and researching for more than 25 years and is the largest independent dyslexia organization in Austria. The AFS method is used successfully in over 65 countries worldwide. This interesting presentation (source: EÖDL) explains the difference between dyslexia and a reading and spelling disorder.
"A dyslexic person with good or average intelligence perceives their environment differently, their attention wanes when they encounter letters or numbers, as they perceive them differently than non-dyslexic people due to their differentiated partial performance. This results in difficulties in learning reading, writing and arithmetic."
Dr. Astrid Kopp-Duller 1995
